Why you should care: On Saturday, September 9, 1922, the victorious Turkish cavalry rode into Smyrna, the richest and most cosmopolitan city in the Ottoman Empire. The city's vast wealth created centuries earlier by powerful Levantine dynasties, its factories teemed with Greeks, Armenians, Turks, and Jews. Together, they had created a majority Christian city that was unique in the Islamic world. But to the Turkish nationalists, Smyrna was a city of infidels. In the aftermath of the First World War and with the support of the Great Powers, Greece had invaded Turkey with the aim of restoring a Christian empire in Asia. But by the summer of 1922, the Greeks had been vanquished by Ataturk's armies after three years of warfare. As Greek troops retreated, the non-Muslim civilians of Smyrna assumed that American and European warships would intervene if and when the Turkish cavalry decided to enter the city. But this was not to be. On September 13, 1922, Turkish troops descended on Smyrna. They rampaged first through the Armenian quarter, and then throughout the rest of the city. They looted homes, raped women, and murdered untold thousands. Turkish soldiers were seen dousing buildings with petroleum. Soon, all but the Turkish quarter of the city was in flames and hundreds of thousands of refugees crowded the waterfront, desperate to escape. The city burned for four days; by the time the embers cooled, more than 100,000 people had been killed and millions left homeless. Based on eyewitness accounts and the memories of survivors, many interviewed for the first time, Paradise Lost offers a vivid narrative account of one of the most vicious military catastrophes of the modern age. Paradise Lost is a terrific read; it's a privilege to be bringing such a compelling book to your attention.

Rakestraw Books "The Bookstore in Danville" is delighted to announce "How to Have Style with Isaac Mizrahi: A Book Event & Fashion Show." This special event will take place on Thursday, 16 October 2008 at the Diablo Country Club. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Wardrobe for Opportunity.

The evening's guest of honor, author and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi will be talking about his new book, How to Have Style (Gotham Books, $30), a gorgeous, fun, real-life guide that teaches women how to tap into their inner creativity to create a look entire their own. A twenty-year veteran of the fashion industry, Isaac Mizrahi has become a unique icon in the world of style. He doesn't do 'makeovers' or take pleasure in berating the way a woman dresses. Instead he is a problem solver -- and a titan who believes that fashion should be seriously fun.

During "How to Have Style with Isaac Mizrahi: A Book Event and Fashion Show," Mizrahi will talk about his new book, take questions from the audience, and sign books for attendees. The evening's festivities include a fashion show styled by local fashionista and wardrobe stylist Carolyn Rovner of C2Style. The show will feature clients of Wardrobe for Opportunity wearing items from Mizrahi's line for Target. Rakestraw Books is also putting together a fabulous raffle to further benefit Wardrobe for Opportunity.

In his new book, How to Have Style, Mizrahi takes twelve real women each with their own style dilemmas, and shows them how to look great. Lisa wants to reinvent herself; Manning wants to be stylish on a budget; Keri wants to look funny and sexy; Rebecca wants to get out a jeans coma, while Brooke wants to find the right jeans, and Susan is looking for stunning evening wear. From the king of real-world chic, How to Have Style will inspire women everywhere on how to have fun creating stylish and beautiful looks that embody their own personal style and work with their lifestyle.

"How to Have Style with Isaac Mizrahi: A Book Event and Fashion Show" is sure to be one of the social events of the season -- fashion, books, fun, and a worthy cause.
